GCSE Results 2019

GCSE Results 2019

Posted on: 23/08/2019

Students at Whitefield School are celebrating after another set of outstanding GCSE results. This year sees the second cohort of students to receive their results under the new 9 to 1 numerical grading system. Grades 7 and 8 are equivalent to A and A* with a Grade 9 being seen as a “super A*”. Only the top 2% of students across the country will be awarded Grade 9. Ofqual, the Government agency in charge of all school examinations, announced that “anyone who achieves a grade 9 will have performed exceptionally” so we are delighted that so many of our students have achieved the ‘gold star’ Grade 9 qualification again this year. The new GCSE courses, introduced two years ago, are designed to be more challenging with less coursework and numerous examinations at the end of the course, rather than in modules with tests along the way. Despite these more challenging examinations, so many of our students have achieved outstanding results.

Top performers include three students who achieved only top grade A*/9 to 7 in all their examinations.

  • Rai Hussein Al Zarif El  Bobo – 1xA*, 5x9, 5x8, 2x7
  • Kowser Hassan – 4x9, 3x8, 3x7
  • Daniel Powlak – 4x8, 5x7

Other amazing results were achieved by

  • Kareem Al-Hamoud – 1xA*, 3x8, 6x7, 2x6, 1x5
  • Sonia Darbari – 2x9, 5x8, 3x7, 2x6
  • Dennis Farruku – 3x8, 5x7, 2x6
  • Arshin Karami – 2x9, 1x8, 4x7, 1xM2, 2x5
  • Shivali Shah – 2x9, 4x8, 3x7, 2x6

There are some outstanding performances across a range of subjects including Biology (100% 9-4), Chemistry (100% 9-4), Physics (100% 9-4), Computer Science (100% 9-4), English Literature (77% 9-4), English Language (67% 9-4) and Mathematics (61% 9-4).

All our vocational subjects have maintained their high pass rates, including subjects such as Employability, IT, Hospitality, Travel & Tourism, Health & Social Care and Finance. In fact, once again, not one Year 11 student is leaving the school this year without having secured their qualifications.

The flexibility offered for all students at Whitefield to study for a qualification for an extra GCSE and even A Level in their home language is a unique strength of the school with 100% of students achieving the top grade passes in Community Languages GCSE examinations. A number of our Year 11 students have also achieved top grade passes in a Community Language A Level this year.

Headteacher, Liz Rymer, commented “I am proud that three students have achieved a full set of grades 9-7 (straight grade A’s, under the old grading system). This puts these students amongst the highest achieving students in the country. And I am also delighted that so many more of our students have made amazing progress and passed all their examinations; some having to overcome real personal challenges and many having only recently arrived in the UK from abroad. Our students never fail to amaze me as so many have had to rapidly learn English as well as cope with the increasingly more complex content for the new examinations. I know that the staff and Governors of the school will want to say a massive ‘congratulations’ to all students on their results and join with me in wishing our Year 11 students the best of luck with their next steps within education whether it be at Whitefield Sixth Form, other colleges or abroad. These results would not have been possible without the dedication and skill of the amazing team of staff at the school, all of whom ‘go the extra mile’ to support all the students, both academically and socially, to ensure every student succeeds.  I am also very fortunate that we have such supportive and caring parents, who I know have felt the increased pressure from the new examination system this year. Following the improvements in our A level results published last week, these GCSE results set the school up for a successful start to the new academic year.”

More details of individual students’ successes, whole school totals and more subject successes will be posted on the school’s website as soon as the final figures and re-marks are confirmed.
