Admissions

IN-YEAR ADMISSIONS

If you wish to apply for a place at Whitefield for your child / children at any time other than during the secondary transfer, this is called an in-year admission.

The process is fairly similar and you will need to apply through Barnet Council by calling 0208 359 2000. You will need to fill in a Common Transfer Form that can only be obtained through the Local Authority; the school will not be able to provide you with this form. Barnet Council are able to see how many school places we have left in each year group. You will be informed if there are no places, and if you wish, your child will be placed on to the waiting list. A space will only become available if another child at the school leaves and you are the next on the list.

Once your child’s application has been processed, Barnet Council will offer you a place in a letter. To confirm the place, you will need to sign the attached letter and return it to Barnet Council. Once you have done this, your details will be sent to the school and you will be contacted by our Admissions Officer. The Admissions Officer will contact you to make an appointment and to let you know if there are any documents you need to bring with you. You and your child will then be invited into school to meet the Admissions Officer, your child’s Pastoral Support Officer (PSO) and Key Stage Coordinator. If appropriate, your child will meet with a member of our EAL (English as an Additional Language) team to assess if your child will need any English support during their time at Whitefield.

At this meeting you will be given a start date for your child, usually the following Monday. Your child will follow an Induction programme on their first day and will be allocated a student buddy in their tutor group. The PSO will meet your child on a regular basis during their first half term to check they are settling in well.

OVER SUBSCRIPTION CRITERIA

If the child's year group is over subscribed then they will automatically enter a waiting list through Barnet Council.  Once a place becomes available they will recieve a letter of acceptance and the admissions process will take place.

YEAR 7 Admissions

We understand that choosing a secondary school for your child can be a difficult decision, so parents and their Year 6 children (or younger) are invited to attend our annual Autumn Open Evening in October. This is a great opportunity to see the school in action, meet the staff and students, tour the school and children can enter competitions. If you are unable to attend this evening, we also run a series of parental tours throughout the school year and are very happy to arrange these for groups or individual families. To make an appointment, please telephone the school on 020 8455 4114.

To apply for a place in Year 7, parents need to apply through the London Borough of Barnet. This application can either be completed online (www.barnet.gov.uk) or by telephoning the Borough directly on 0208 359 2000 and asking for School Admissions. You will need to complete a Common Transfer Form and either submit it online or send it by post to the Local Authority.

Every year we arrange for Year 6 children to visit the school. This year the visits are planned for Thursday 3rd July and Friday 4thJuly. During the induction days, children visit the school and take part in lessons and special activities. The days give them a chance to experience life in a high school and hopefully settle any nerves they may have about starting. We also organise an Induction Evening for new parents on Thursday 6th June. The Induction Evening is a chance for parents to come to the school and meet their child’s form tutor and to get all the information that will be needed, such as uniform, expectations and times of the school day, etc. There is also a Year 6 to 7 Summer School, where students are able to go on day trips and learn more about the school. All the activities that we run for new starters are to ensure that all our Year 7 students and their parents quickly feel part of the Whitefield School community.
